If my mom has a Indian Identification card can I easily get one ?

If my mom or grandparent has a Indian membership card and is 50% native American then what steps would I have to do to get a card and can it help me with college or getting a job?
Also she is Cherokee Indian and we live in Ohio, if that makes any difference.
