Both the 1920 and 1930 census should provide specific details about John’s boyhood. Unfortunately, there are no indices of these online except through Ancestry’s paid service. You would have to have some understanding of where he may have been born and lived at the time.
Probably the best bet would be to find an obituary of John in the Hammond Times newspaper. Hopefully the obituary would shed some biographical light of his life.
John C. Janis 24 Jun 1911 15 Feb 1994 Hammond, Lake, Indiana
John does appear in the Social Security records. You can order a copy of this record from the SSI.
6115 Columbia Ave, Hammond, IN, 46320-2627
His address back in the 1990′s.
There was an obituary of a John Janis in 1956 who resided in Chicago, but the obituary itself was listed in the Hammond Times Newspaper. It mentions son John, but also lists him as residing in Chicago. If you’d like it, please let me know.
Unfortunately, thats all I could find.
